When we visited Alabama from Pennsylvania when I was in the second and third grade one of the things that were a clue that I had crossed the Mason-Dixon line was white, wrought-iron lawn furniture. I am sure that there were people up North who had such furniture, but the stark white furniture, covered in a thin film of neon green pollen some how epitomized the region for me — and the fact that my grandmother had a set in her backyard.
