Day 172 - Sneaks up on you
Ben Hillyer, 2014
In more northern climates, fall is splashy and colorful. The hills of upstate New York and mountains of Virginia and Tennessee are painted in bright oranges, reds and yellow. Fall in the Miss-Lou is more subtle, gradual, even to the point where locals claim we have no fall at all. Here is a picture of October in Natchez is all its subtleties.
Day 170 - Welcome fall

My wife knows her birthday is just around the corner when the spider lilies (surprise lilies or whatever you might call them) literally pop up on the landscape. Cooler temps, the balloon race and autumn leaves are not far behind either. The bright red blooms vibrating against the green grass are hard to ignore and are a welcome harbinger of fall.
They are also a challenge to photograph. Photographing just one doesn't compare to the show of hundred flowers dotting the landscape. Here are a couple attempts to capture these beautiful flowers.
Day 169 — By the river

Don't get me wrong, I love the Mississippi River bridges between Natchez and Vidalia. I just love the Mississippi River more. In my opinion, the bridges get all of the attention as the river takes a back seat. Here are two view of two barges -- evening at top, morning at bottom -- that expresses what I love about the river.

Day 168 — Get your kicks

The Phillips 66 sign dotted the highways of my childhood. Like the McDonald's arches it became synonymous with trips to Florida, North Carolina and points in between. I don't see many of these signs anymore and certainly not like the one on Lynda Lee Drive in Natchez.
